Summer in New Orleans: LL Cool J, bull runs and more

June 12 2013 | News

Fireworks over the Mississippi River

From 4th of July fireworks to its own bull run, New Orleans hosts plenty to do during the summer months. The weather is warm, the drinks are cold, and the rates for hotel rooms are some of the best you’ll find all year.

The French Quarter is one of the best areas in the city to stay entertained. One event worth checking out is Essence Music Festival. Usually held the weekend of July 4th, this festival is one of the largest annual African-American events in the nation. From local artists to LL Cool J, festival goers will have the chance to hear music by a variety of artists.

Once you’ve worn your welcome at the music festival, walk over to the river front to see not one, but two spectacular fireworks displays over the Mississippi River on July 4th. Just opposite from the French Quarter, this unique show features fireworks shot from dueling barges, and is sure to hold its own when compared to any other fireworks display in the nation. On the day of the show, local merchants and attractions usually offer discounts, which also makes this a great day for deal hunters.

And if you’re looking for something with a little more spice, try running with the bulls - New Orleans style. A little less dramatic than the The Running of The Bulls in Barcelona, these “bulls” are actually the ladies from the New Orleans-based female flat-track derby team, The Big Easy Rollergirls.

Whatever you decide to do, Le Richilieu is in the middle of it all, providing you the best and most convenient place kick back between adventures.
