Satchmo Sumemerfest: 3 days of jazz in the French Quarter

July 23 2014 | News

Satchmo Summer Fest is just a week and a half away and it’s not too late to plan your French Quarter getaway to enjoy this popular New Orleans music festival.

Last year more than 60,000 people attended the three day festival and this year promises to be even bigger and better than ever. The festival which is named after New Orleans’ own Louis Armstrong includes three days of music, discussions about the life and music of Satchmo, as well as seminars focused on the history of jazz music in New Orleans.

This year’s performers include John Boutte and Charmaine Neville on Friday, Shotgun Jazz Band and Glen David Andrews on Saturday, and Jeremy Davenport and Kermit Ruffins on Sunday. Also on Sunday there will be The Ella & Louie Tribute Band, an amazing band that you don’t want to miss if you love the sounds of Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald.

However, the fun doesn’t stop with the music. There will be a second line, traditional jazz dance lessons, and a trumpet tribute. Along with that, there will plenty of good food from some of the best restaurants in the French Quarter.

Don’t forget to bring the kids. The entire event is family friendly and there will be special activities set up for the kids inside the air conditioned U.S. Mint.

The best part is that the entire festival is free. This year the festival is July 31 through August 3 at the U.S. Mint. You don’t want to miss it! Hotel Le Richelieu is located within walking distance of all of the fun if you need a place to stay. I hope to see you there.
