Celebrating Fourth of July in New Orleans

June 30 2014 | News

New Orleans is hands down one of the best places to spend your Fourth of July weekend.  Every year, thousands of people gather in The Big Easy to watch fireworks, eat great food, listen to music and celebrate America.

Our city's fireworks show has been rated one of the best in the nation, and with good reason.  There isn’t just one set of fireworks to watch – there’s two, and they happen at the exact same time over the Mississippi River.  Basically, fireworks are set up on “dueling barges” on the river, and they try their best to out-do each other, while creating one fantastic fireworks show in the process.  It’s really something to see in person!

There are a lot of great places to watch the fireworks, too. If you’re in the French Quarter, you can get a great view from Woldenberg Park between the Governor Nicholls Street Wharf and the Spanish Plaza (near the Canal Street Ferry landing).  You can also take the Canal Street Ferry over to Algiers Point, where you can watch the fireworks with the city as a backdrop! Bring blankets, chairs, food and beverages.

If you really want to amp up the experience, tune into either WWL 870 AM, WWL-FM, WWL.com or Magic 101.9 FM for patriotic music that’s set up to broadcast simultaneously with the fireworks.

Fourth of July weekend is also a great weekend in New Orleans if you’re a bargain hunter.  Many of the shops and boutiques will have great sales, and you can save money on attractions.  For example, you can get $4 off any single ticket (adult or child) to The Aquarium of the Americas or The Audubon Insectarium  from July 3 through July 6!

If you’re staying with us during the July 4th weekend, be sure to stop by and chat with Sarah, the Maison Dupuy concierge.  She can help you plan where to eat, what to see, and give you directions to the best fireworks watching spots.
