4 Best Breakfast Spots in the French Quarter

Whether you’re looking to start the day fresh or begin recovering from a long night, a top-notch French Quarter breakfast will do the trick. Brunch is a popular mealtime in the French Quarter (and New Orleans in general), but what about good old fashioned breakfast joints? Here are four of the best breakfast spots for you to try in the French Quarter.

Café du Monde (800 Decatur St)

It would be sacrilege to not include the city’s premier beignet purveyor, Café du Monde, on a best French Quarter breakfasts list. If you’re not yet acquainted, beignets are crispy, puffy, French donuts that you have to dig through a heaping pile of powdered sugar to locate—but once you do, that trio you just ordered will be gone in no time. Order a steaming mug of café au lait along with it, and you’ve got a simple and affordable, yet unforgettable breakfast.

Café Beignet (311 Bourbon St, 334 Royal St)

While Café du Monde may get most of the beignet credit, Café Beignet offers its own fresh handmade beignets but also a wide variety of other breakfast specialties at both of its French Quarter locations. You can dive into classic omelets, from ham & cheese to Western or veggie, or spring for a New Orleans twist on breakfast traditions, such as Cajun hash browns with andouille sausage or the crawfish omelet. Looking for something sweeter? Take your pick of a traditional or pecan-topped Belgian waffle or a southern-style version of French toast.

Daisy Dukes (121 Chartres St)

Daisy Dukes offers downhome southern-style food and atmosphere 24 hours a day—including a 24/7 breakfast, so you can get your breakfast foods fix anytime day or night. From 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. every day, you can enjoy a deliciously affordable Early Bird Breakfast with two eggs, hash browns or grits, a choice of meat, and toast or biscuit ($4.50 with meat, $2.99 without). Or choose from their selection of breakfast items, from omelets and homemade pancakes to a rib-eye or center cut pork chop. Thirsting to start your day off with a kick? Bottomless Cajun Bloody Mary’s are $8.00 with free refills with the purchase of a meal.

Oceana Grill (739 Conti St)

From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oceana Grill serves up a killer breakfast menu that includes “world-famous crepes,” like the St. Francis Crepe with shrimp, Louisiana crabmeat, ratatoutille (vegetable medley) and Swiss cheese. That’s in addition to a wide selection of omelets, including classics and localized versions like the crawfish omelet or the Royal omelet with alligator sausage, topped with a crawfish and mushroom cream sauce. If you’re looking for something more traditional, this joint also has a full menu of your typical morning fare, like eggs, bacon, sausage, and biscuits. For something really special, go for the Eggs Melanzana, a whimsical combination of eggplant parmesan and eggs benedict.

You can’t go wrong with any of these four French Quarter breakfast hotspots. They say you should never skip breakfast if you want to start the day off right, and down in the French Quarter, that sentiment couldn’t be more true.
