Kicking off Christmas: 'Shop Away in the Vieux Carre'

November 13 2013 | News

It’s time to start that holiday shopping! As is tradition, French Quarter businesses will be kicking off the holiday season with the annual French Market Christmas Tree lighting and “Shop Away in the Vieux Carre” event.

On Nov. 16, shoppers can take advantage of specials at business all across the French Quarter, and get all of their holiday shopping done in one day-long swoop. There will be free pedi-cab shuttles from 11 a.m. t o 5 p.m. from designated stops, making it fun and convenient to go from store to store.

“Saints” Nicholas will also be making an appearance at Pop City in the French Market. Children and adults can have their photograph taken with him for free!

Between stops, shoppers will be entertained throughout the day with live music and performances, including the New Orleans Navy Band Brass Quintet, Miss Claudia and the Mistletoes, Uptown Music Theatre, Faubourg Quartet, Cristina Perez and more great local acts.

One of our favorite parts comes at 6 p.m. – the tree lighting at Washington Artillery Park. Once the big, beautiful tree is lit, a brass band will lead carolers from the Tree to the Shops at the Hhistoric Upper Pontalba on Jackson Square for a short but fun sing-a-long to carols with songsheets for the public. It truly is the perfect way to celebrate the beginning of the holiday season, and end a great day of Christmas shopping.

Hotel St. Marie still has a few rooms available for this holiday filled weekend! Since the hotel is located on prime French Quarter real estate, it is very close to all the action. Guests can pop in and out of their rooms to unload shopping bags, or just to warm up for a bit.

All you have to do is book a room online, or call us anytime: (504) 561-8951.

Happy shopping!
